Recent years have seen significant growth in the Baja California industry thanks to the medical sector activity in cities like Tijuana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a Tijuana Economic Development Corporation (DEITAC for its acronym in Spanish) association study, investment in the sector has grown by 58%1<\/sup>, placing Baja California as a leader in the production of medical supplies in Latin America and nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The many products manufactured in the region include laboratory diagnostic equipment, supplies for artificial ventilators, surgical circuits, prostheses, medication dispensers, thermometers, and digital baumanometer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The medical industry\u2019s contribution to economic growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Mexican medical device industry is one of the most prominent in the world, ranking as the sixth largest exporter and the tenth largest importer2<\/sup> of medical devices, according to Socorro Mac\u00edas Ahumada, who chairs the Baja California Medical Devices Cluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country exported US$18.600 billion in medical devices in 2020, with 50%  of these products manufactured in Baja California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carlos Jaramillo, president of DEITAC, stated in an interview3<\/sup> that the healthcare science industry (which includes Tijuana and San Diego, California) has accomplished a vertical integration, enabling the efficient supply of medical devices and services efficiently to meet the health demand of the San Diego-Tijuana region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, the medical tourism sector has become pivotal in the past years, thanks to the combination of biotechnology and light industries, coupled with innovation competence, technological availability, skilled personnel, and strategic location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As stated by Jaramillo, the San Diego-Tijuana region is the number one manufacturer of medical devices in the world and in the biotechnology sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical sector: a captivating investment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, the medical industry of Baja California is composed of 82 manufacturing companies2<\/sup> creating 82,000 direct jobs and 12% to 15% of indirect jobs providing goods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two primary companies responsible for boosting the development of Baja California medical industry are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stryker<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Stryker is a company focused on manufacturing sterile barrier surgical scrubs for invasive procedures and remanufacturing medical devices from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demand for their \u201cindispensable\u201d product multiplied during the pandemic fueling company expansion, notes Alfredo Due\u00f1ez Tovar, chief of manufacturing in Tijuana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a talk entitled \u201cMedical industry: innovation and future,\u201d he explained that reprocessing North American products fulfills their environmental protection contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Varian<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the summer of 2022, Varian, a company manufacturing ontological medical devices, got a US$20 billion investment4<\/sup> to build a new plant in Baja California, creating nearly 100 direct jobs for skilled professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
