5 tips for traveling safely in Mexico during Holy Week

Read Time:3 Minute

During Holy Week, thousands of families take a break and travel throughout the country, making it important to understand the main ways to plan a safe trip in Mexico

5 tips for traveling safely

An essential key to a successful trip minimizing the chance you’ll need a contingency plan. Therefore, to meet this criterion follow these steps:

1. Check weather conditions

When planning a trip, consider whether the rainy season or a cold front could greatly affect the place you are staying, especially if it is a beach.

Take your time to read the forecasts carefully and, from there, schedule your itinerary by avoiding those unpleasant months.

2. Find accommodation in advance

As usual, one of the most relevant travel tips is to book your hotel room well ahead of time. Following this, there are more chances to find better prices than if you search during the high season.

Likewise, it is highly recommended to compare prices of accommodations on several platforms before entering credit card details to lock in a reservation or pay for it all at once.

3. Perform a vehicle inspection

Before you do anything else, it is smart to check your vehicle’s health by thoroughly inspecting ABS brakes, the central locking, headlights, turn signals, seat belts, oil levels, and overall engine performance.

4. Verify and get familiar with the route

A safe trip in Mexico, especially if you travel by road, means paying attention to these factors:

  • Calculate the toll booth fees. After deciding wich highways you will travel, remember to write down the toll roads and check how much they charge. Also, purchasing a Tag PASE1 is suggested; after charging it with a balance, it can be read at all the national toll booths and pay tolls virtually.
  • Carry spare tires and reflective triangles. Anticipate any emergency by keeping a triangle kit with you to warn other drivers that you have stopped for repairs (in case the vehicle inspection missed something.)
  • Don’t overtake from the right. Remember to stay in the right lane and move to the left lane only to pass; complying with civil liability is critical.

Always keep in mind when driving on the road that it is crucial to abide by the speed limit and know Mexico’s emergency numbers.

Historical precedent shows that during Holy Week, there will be a heavy traffic load2. Traffic accidents will lessen with these tips.

5. Secure luggage

If you carry bicycles or luggage on top of your car, make sure to efficiently and properly tie everything down so as not to block the trunk or doors.

However, if you travel by plane, verify that each suitcase does not exceed the authorized weight in kilograms nor includes dangerous objects.

As mentioned, a fruitful travel plan contemplates before and during each trip phase. This translates to taking a couple of months to get everything covered.

Why is safe travel in Mexico best planned with time?

The reason is that it is essential to address each of these travel tips. Moreover, you will have more time to calculate the cost of everything (such as amenities, transportation, and hotels), helping you stick to a budget.

Additionally, planning ahead gives you plenty of time to adapt aspects of the trip or include other items you may have overlooked at the beginning.

Whether you travel by plane, train, or automobile or another transportation, thinking about each minute of the trip will be helpful to have a fantastic weekend getaway.
